lyrics

Jim loved to tell stories
In the mountains with his friends
The world offered such glories
When it was just them and the land
He said,
“Virginia is so far behind and all these bridges I have burned have helped me find myself,
For the wilderness is an open book to me.
Yes the wilderness is an open book to me.”

And then when others came
He welcomed them with open arms
And sent their wagons on their way
Knowing they would do no harm
He said,
“The land is so wide there will never be enough people to fill it all....oh no.
For the wilderness is an open book to me.
Yes the wilderness is an open book to me.”

But Jim! If you could see now
How dirty air rises from dirtier towns
And even your mountains are
Full of it now
Would the wilderness still be that book to you?
Would the wilderness still be that book to you?

Now I wish it was just a story
Nothing but fiction
Then we'd bask in the glory
Of the creation
